Executive Coordinator (She/Her)

Hi! I’m Marissa Nelson, executive coordinator at The 19th. I also work on the team that produces our events, which is how I got my start here in 2022. Most of my work is behind-the-scenes: setting timelines, booking venues and answering attendee questions. At times, I also report and write stories for our site and social platforms, usually about queer community, or the latest pop-culture-meets-politics news of the day.

I care a lot about journalism, particularly how it informs the way we see the world and ourselves in it. That’s why I’m so proud to be a part of the work The 19th does, telling stories and centering communities that are too often underrepresented in mainstream media.

I studied journalism at DePaul University in Chicago, where I earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Before joining The 19th, I produced for WTTW News’ nightly news program “Chicago Tonight.”

I grew up in central Wisconsin and, in true ’sconnie fashion, love cheese in all forms. I now live in Chicago with my cat (and coworker), Haze. When I’m not wrangling deadlines, I can be found (slowly) running along the lakefront, hosting “Love is Blind” watch parties and sipping an ice cold Diet Coke.

My work is free to consume and free to republish because of contributions from readers like you. A donation of $19 goes a long way toward sustaining our nonprofit newsroom.
