Explore 2024-2025 19th News Fellows’ Work
The 19th is proud to share the work of our third cohort of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Fellows. This groundbreaking, competitive fellowship seeks to create meaningful pipelines for those excluded from U.S. newsrooms.
Fellows spend a year working in reporting, audience engagement and product with full-time salaries and benefits. They receive on-the-job training, mentorship, development opportunities and career coaching to prepare them for their paths after their fellowships.

Reporting
The 19th’s three reporting fellows are embedded in the newsroom and rotate between editors to gain experience reporting across politics, breaking news, caregiving, health, education and LGBTQ+ issues, among other topics. They’re encouraged to pitch and report on stories that center on the communities that interest them.
Alexis Wray

At The 19th, Alexis reported on student activists and covered Democrat Josh Stein’s pivotal win in the North Carolina governor’s race.
She dug into Charlotte schools providing affordable housing to educators, co-bylined stories on how Black women protected voting rights activists in Selma in March 1965 and how Black women faced Inauguration Day in 2025.
Alexis supports partnership editor Abby Johnston by sourcing republished 19th stories to track our total journalism reach and expand our partnership network. Read all of Alexis’s work at The 19th here.

Eden Turner

At The 19th, Eden wrote about the lack of positive representation of Black girls in popular media and Native American women stepping into leadership.
She covered the first weeks of President Donald Trump’s second administration, including his move to shut down federal DEI offices and executive orders targeting trans service members and military DEI.
Her co-bylines include families suing after losing access to gender-affirming care and our Bloody Sunday anniversary coverage. Read all of Eden’s work at The 19th here.

Sabreen Dawud

At The 19th, Sabreen reported at the intersections of politics, health and race.
Her co-bylined reporting on Kamala Harris’ final campaign event at Howard University was one of our most-read stories on election week. Her solutions journalism story on postpartum care looked at systemic disparities faced by parents, particularly in communities of color.
Sabreen is also particularly proud of her piece on Native American erasure from mainstream narratives and how vital their voices are. Read all of Sabreen’s work at The 19th here.

Product
The 19th’s product fellow works directly with product managers and the Chief Product Officer to build products and features that support the 19th’s business goals and align with our mission.
The product fellow participates in team design thinking cycles, including conducting audience interviews, drawing data-driven insights about our audience and generating ideas that meet the needs they shared with us. The fellow takes features from ideation to completion, including project managing and communicating with stakeholders. They work closely with designers, who design features, and engineers, who build, test and launch products.
Amethyst Holmes

At The 19th, Amethyst led an initiative to improve messaging on articles republished to partner sites in The 19th News Network and conducted a competitive newsletter analysis that built on previous work.
She supported processes to ensure our news products meet quality standards and helped align our product goals to meet audience needs.
The fellowship has allowed her to care for people through technology, strategy and innovation. Her work has strengthened our ability to serve readers well. Read all of Amethyst’s work at The 19th here.
