In our ongoing series 19 Minutes with The 19th, we aim to give you, our audience, the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at how our reporters cover the many issues impacting communities across the country.
We put the series on hold for a while, but we’re back to talk about the ongoing impact after a leaked draft decision from the U.S. Supreme Court showed that Roe v. Wade will be overturned.
The landmark 1973 decision guaranteed the constitutional right to an abortion up until the point of fetal viability, and the draft decision that leaked earlier this month is related to Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which centers on a Mississippi law that banned abortion after 15 weeks — violating the fetal viability standard.
The leak of the decision has had myriad impacts: Republican-led states are moving to strengthen the laws they have on the books if Roe is overturned, clinics are either in limbo or fearful about being able to provide for patients, interest in medication abortion is growing and there’s a host of other murky legal questions.
With all that in mind, The 19th’s health care reporter Shefali Luthra and reporter Jennifer Gerson will join us to discuss their reporting and where things could go from here after the decision leak.
Be sure to tune in so you don’t miss their updates!
