We’re hiring a Brand Designer

Location: Remote (U.S. Only)

Salary range: $80,000 – $100,000

Travel requirements: 2-4 times per year

We are seeking a full-time Brand Designer to join The 19th’s Creative team. This role will be instrumental in ensuring a strong, cohesive visual identity across editorial and audience-facing platforms, shaping how our journalism reaches and resonates with our growing community.

You will work closely with the Chief Creative Officer to expand The 19th’s brand, design systems, and visual language in a way that is cohesive, accessible, and impactful. Collaborating with the brand team, audience strategists, and other visual experts, you will create compelling brand materials, social-first content and other creative assets that strengthen The 19th’s visual identity across all platforms.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Design compelling visual content for The 19th’s journalism across platforms, including editorial illustrations, social graphics and visual storytelling elements.
  • Ensure brand consistency across all design work, reinforcing The 19th’s distinct visual identity.
  • Develop creative assets for newsletters, membership campaigns, events, and marketing initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the newsroom and audience teams to translate complex stories into engaging, shareable visuals that meet our brand and editorial standards.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, balancing short-turnaround needs with long-term creative initiatives.
  • Experiment with new digital storytelling techniques, helping to push the boundaries of how The 19th presents its journalism visually.

  • Participating in culture building, inclusive decision making and bringing ideas to different parts of our work to help us improve as an organization, such as by helping onboard new team members or participating in our hiring processes.

What you’ll bring

  • 4+ years of experience in brand design, editorial design, or a related field, ideally within a newsroom, media organization, or agency setting.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing expertise in design, branding, and editorial storytelling.
  • A strong foundation in key design principles, including typography, color theory, layout and motion.
  • Expertise in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), with the ability to quickly learn new tools as needed.
  • Experience translating journalism into compelling visual narratives, making complex stories more engaging and accessible.
  • Understanding of designing for diverse audiences, including accessibility considerations in digital media.
  • Ability to think strategically and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate design rationale and engage in constructive critiques.
  • Team-oriented, collaborative and adaptable, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Familiarity with WordPress, Airtable and motion design is a plus.
  • Experience with newsletters, digital membership campaigns, nonprofit media branding or 360 digital marketing campaigns for news media is a plus.
