Audience Engagement Producer (She/Her)

I’m Myrka Moreno, one of two audience engagement producers at The 19th. It’s a wordy title that basically means I help The 19th’s work reach readers (you!) where they are. Much of that work is accepting that not everyone gets their news in the same way. My job is to figure out the best way to share our journalism that centers the facts of the reporting and the needs of our readers.

My interest in journalism stemmed from feeling unrepresented in the news. I’m from the Rio Grande Valley — the border region between Mexico and Texas — and was raised in a migrant working family. The only time I saw someone like me in the news was when there was another tragedy. During my time as a student at St. Edward’s University in Austin, I worked on various reporting projects that centered around migrant workers and students and was also the social media editor of the student paper.

Another formative part of my childhood: I was raised on the internet. Much of my youth was spent finding and building communities on social media. Reader-centered journalism is that sweet spot between storytelling and these internet communities I’m deeply familiar with.

My work is free to consume and free to republish because of contributions from readers like you. A donation of $19 goes a long way toward sustaining our nonprofit newsroom.
