Hi, there! I’m Emily Swelgin, chief product officer at The 19th. I lead a fabulous team of product managers, designers and engineers tasked with building new ways for you to experience and support our journalism. My favorite part of this job is hearing from readers about the impacts we’re making and how we can better meet their needs. I’d love to hear your feedback: email us at [email protected].
I got my start in news designing and coding data and visual stories at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, honed my design skills at the Washington Post, began designing news products at The Texas Tribune and, in 2020, brought everything I’d learned here to support The 19th’s mission. I’ve worked on a breadth of topics and products, including Milwaukee’s infant mortality crisis, the 2016 presidential election, the n-word’s place in American vernacular, the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and a newsletter for new Texans to become civically engaged. With every assignment, I’ve sought to make the news more digestible, engaging, relatable and accessible.
I’m a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Go Heels!), and my work has been recognized by the Society for News Design, Online News Association, World Press Photo and the Data Journalism Awards.
My work is free to consume and free to republish because of contributions from readers like you. A donation of $19 goes a long way toward sustaining our nonprofit newsroom.
