Minimum salary: $75,000 / year

Location: Anywhere in the US (Remote)

Reports to: Creative Director

At The 19th, we aim to be a source of news and information for those who have been underserved and underrepresented in American media. Our goal is to empower those we serve —  particularly women, women of color and the LGBTQ+ community — with the information, resources and community they need to be equal participants in our democracy.

The 19th’s small-but-mighty creative team is looking for a brand designer to help us craft award-winning visuals that tell The 19th’s story. As our first brand designer, you’ll have the opportunity to create exceptional, meaningful work and problem-solve with innovative team members in pursuit of our mission. Together, you’ll help elevate readers’ voices, engage our community and build The 19th’s brand.

As Brand Designer, you will create effective and beautiful brand assets for external and internal audiences across platforms, including website, social, video, live events, ads and print. This role will collaborate across departments (including events, editorial, product, and partnerships) to nurture and expand the brand.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design digital graphics, marketing and memberships campaigns, assets for virtual and in-person events (including signage and wayfinding), and other brand visuals to reach and serve diverse audiences
  • Work across departments to develop visual assets from initial concept to final design, ensuring accuracy and deadline delivery
  • Support internal and external stakeholders on brand system implementation and best practices, ensuring cohesive and consistent brand design across products and platforms
  • Continually iterate on design systems that make the brand relevant and relatable to our target audiences
  • Maintain brand design system documentation and lead training, workshops and other forums to educate stakeholders on design thinking, brand experience, and design-driven storytelling

Non-essential duties (as capacity permits):

  • Participate in culture building, inclusive decision making, and bringing ideas to different parts of our work in order to help us improve as an organization. For example, helping to onboard new team members and participating in our hiring process
  • Participate in team building, organizational and individual relationship building, and professional development throughout the year
  • Other duties as assigned

Relevant skills include:

  • Graduate of a design school, or any relevant comprehensive training around key design principles (emphasis, balance and alignment, contrast, repetition, etc.)
  • Strong facility with typography, color theory, layout and motion
  • At least 3-4 years of experience in an agency or brand side design role, with a focus on high quality design in consumer, e-commerce and/or media publishing environments
  • Must be a team player, able to work within tight deadlines on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment; experience working in a fast-paced, startup environment preferred
  • Expertise in design tools including Creative Suite, Figma and ability to learn new software, as needed; familiarity with WordPress, and/or Airtable a plus
  • Experience designing 360 digital marketing campaigns for news media is a plus
  • Strong visual and written communication style; ability to convey conceptual ideas and design rationale and engage in constructive design critiques
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize accordingly and iterate quickly
  • Ability to think strategically around solving problems that at times might not yet be fully-defined
  • Optimistic, energetic and collaborative
  • You share our values, and work in accordance with those values

We know there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who possess important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. We also encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
