Scope of work
The 19th is seeking a front-end developer to build performant and visually impactful features that improve the delivery of our journalism. You’ll be responsible for translating design specs into functional interfaces and ensuring components are accessible, performant and compatible across multiple browsers and devices.
We’re particularly interested in candidates with experience developing and supporting design systems with flexible and reusable components, or experience with Apple News theme development.
Each project will have a product manager, product designer and a second engineer responsible for reviewing your code and providing feedback. You’ll meet with the project team to discuss and refine requirements before development begins and you’ll share your progress in a project management tool and in a weekly Zoom call.
Projects include
- Implement redesigns of existing templates and components (e.g. newsletter landing page template, prominent website CTA, article page byline treatment);
- Bring HTML markup up to accessibility standards (e.g. article page header tags);
- Refactor existing CSS/SASS to make components more flexible and reusable;
- Fix bugs we’ve accumulated across 19thnews.org;
- Add existing article page features to our Apple News template.
Skills required
- 5+ years of experience in front-end development (HTML, CSS, Javascript), preferably with previous WordPress or PHP development;
- Experience using frontend templating languages (we use Twig) and modern CSS frameworks;
- Experience collaborating with and taking feedback from designers and other developers;
- An aptitude for writing clean, efficient, well-documented code in Github;
- Comfortable refactoring CSS and extracting website components to be more modular;
- Familiarity with website performance and accessibility standards;
- Ability to manage and communicate clearly about deadlines;
- Experience with regression testing, React or Apple News development a plus.
